Helping others reach their full potential for a healthier and happier life is at the heart of everything we do. In January 2020 we commissioned a national UK survey of 2000 adults that sought to explore attitudes towards mental health and alternatives of anti-depressant medication. As 2020 was historic in terms of challenges, which are still being faced today, we conducted follow-up research to better understand how people have been affected by Covid-19 and whether it has changed their attitude towards mental health.
The follow-up survey presented some of the original questions from the first survey around attitudes towards mental wellbeing and the roles that lifestyle, social media, diet, exercise and nutritional supplements play as well as some new themes. We were keen to explore if and how the pandemic has affected peoples’ mental health and their perspective on how they live their lives.
The results provide real insight of attitudes towards mental health and wellbeing both before and during a worldwide pandemic. Including real-life personal experiences, the survey results highlight the depth of mental health issues and the true impact every element of our life has on our mental wellbeing, which has become even more apparent in these challenging times. Covid-19 has without a doubt caused the nation to Reflect, Reset and start to Rebuild their lives.

As this survey was conducted whilst still experiencing the Covid-19 pandemic, the data gives us real insight into critical issues at ground level. While our first survey explored alternative treatments, outside of anti-depressants, the findings highlight the importance of lifestyle on our mental health – reinforcing our commitment to provide expert advice and guidance to help people as we move forward into the future.
Following the results from the first survey, Dr Elizabeth Robinson RMN BSc(Hons) PhD ENB 985 DipMan IPT shared her expertise with us, providing expert mental health tips to support your mental wellbeing. Dr Elizabeth Robinson is a psychotherapist who has worked in the field of mental health for 35 years. Her PHD at the University of Durham focused on depression and she is involved in forensic psychiatry and mental health research. After reviewing our ‘Attitudes to mental wellbeing – phase 2 report’, she shared her own comments on the impact of Covid-19 and suggestions on helping to maintain positive mental health.
How we feel inside is an essential part of our wellbeing, and with mental health being such an increasingly prevalent topic today, we see the insight collected as invaluable for our vision of helping others live happier and healthier lives. Three actions that are prevailing from our survey findings is the desire to reflect, reset and rebuild. We know that reflecting and resetting are popular actions that people take, particularly at the beginning of the year. Our survey findings have made it apparent that rebuilding lives is an action that the pandemic has caused a lot of thought among many. Using the insight collected from both surveys and suggestions from industry experts, we want to help others to nurture their state of mind and rebuild their lives.
Five key themes were highlighted throughout our survey findings when it came to the different ways people wanted to rebuild their lives and support their mental wellbeing. We’ve used these themes to create our 5-a-day mental health tips to help guide you in achieving inner bliss - highlighting the need to focus on different lifestyle factors for holistic wellbeing. These activities include:
1. Taking part in mind-boosting activities
There are many activities we can do to stimulate our brains and improve our mood – spending time in nature, exercising, having some ‘me’ time and noting down your gratitude, to list a few.
2. Checking up or keeping in touch with loved ones
Be kind always – to yourself and to others. Talking helps and while others can support you, in turn, you never know what someone is going through so checking up on them every so often can make a big difference to both yours and someone else’s day.
3. Adding structure to your day to achieve a work/life balance
If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s taught us to slow down and prioritise what matters. We can all get caught up with work and it’s important to find time for other things that make you happy like spending time with family or even some self-care.
4. Eating a healthy meal
The link between the mood we find ourselves in and what we decide to eat has long been known. Moving towards a more balanced diet will help you feel better, sleep better, handle stress more successfully. Discover the connection between food and your mood here.
5. Making a small change towards sustainable living
We all know that sustainable living is good for the planet’s wellbeing, and it can also be good for our own personal wellbeing. There are many small changes you can make every day to get a step closer towards sustainable living – you can recycle, upcycle, support local and eco-friendly businesses, reduce food waste, commute less, the list is endless.
Focus on these five actions every day to help you and others achieve an improved state of mind.
